sense to create a year round supply because this shortage of local produce creates
inflated prices during low production months. So why isn’t everyone harvesting
tomatoes in January? Because the optimal growth and yield of the tomato plant is
attained with 14 hours of photo period and there are few places in the US that get
more than 4 months of this natural sunlight.
HPS lighting has been the most common solution for greenhouse growers that want to
take their business into winter production. But there are difficulties that have kept the
majority of growers gardening in season. HPS lighting uses a significant amount of
electricity as well as creating a great deal of waste heat that must be ventilated in warm
weather when the price of electricity is at its peak.. The same lights have a very short
