Ever since my first goldfish I have considered algae as a slimy nuisance. The
appearance of the green coating that signaled the dreaded cleaning of the tank. Based
on this life long hatred of green stuff on the side of my aquarium, I was intrigued to
discover that this green annoyance not only supports much of the life on our planet, but
also has the potential to provide a promising solution to many of the problems of our
time.
Algae occur in almost every habitat on earth. We are already using forms of algae for
everything from ice cream to rubber. You can eat it, fuel your car with it, and clean
your smokestack and wastewater with it. While we might assume that a life form that
is so widely adaptable to our basic needs would fall into one of our simple categories-
the truth is that “algae” is only a convenient grouping of a diverse range of organisms.
The study of the beneficial uses of algae is a new world of potential that we have only
begun to investigate. By providing a light source without heat we are better able to
mimic the environment of all forms of algae in a controlled environment. Algae is
temperamental. By excluding the heat factor of artificial lighting we are able to move
